New Orleans is not okay.

Hundreds of thousands of its people remain displaced, their homes uninhabitable; vast swaths of the city remain empty and lifeless, with no utilities or public services; businesses remain shuttered, their owners unsure when customers will return.

The city has put on a brave front, preparing for Mardi Gras and conventions to jump-start its tourism-driven economy. But when will its people come home?
Since Katrina hit on August 29, 2005, the city has struggled for answers about how to restore, rebuild and repopulate its devastated residential neighborhoods and commercial zones. The reality is that New Orleans residents will not truly begin the long recovery process until they feel adequately protected from the next deadly hurricane.

One Voice for New Orleans is a grassroots campaign to educate Americans and rally them around legislative efforts to protect and restore New Orleans.

New Orleans is one of the most historic, vibrant and culturally rich cities in America, but today the city needs your help to thrive once again.

If you care about the city or its residents, tell congress that you want to protect the city from future storms.

It is time for Washington to address the deadliest civil engineering failure in this country's history-one that has cost more than 1,000 lives, has destroyed 250,000 homes and has fractured thousands of families now spread across 48 states.

The levee breaches that allowed Katrina to wash over New Orleans were caused by an act of negligence - not an act of nature - the failure to properly construct and maintain the region's flood protection system.

Right now the federal government is considering funding for a fortified levee system built to withstand strong storms and protect the city from future flooding.

Without your help, New Orleans may die. We need your help NOW.

* Forward this email to your colleagues, friends and family - especially those outside of Louisiana so that they can learn about the plight of New Orleans.
* Email your state's Congressional leaders to tell them that New Orleans matters to you.

We aren't looking for handouts, just a helping hand. Together we can save a great American city.

Thank you,
One Voice for New Orleans

While waiting for pix,

here are two new knitters at my LYS, Knit'n Knibble. they are both making that orange felted bag you see hooked on the back of the chair, there. we were helping them with their cast-ons and commemorated the occasion with photos.

yes, well

everything got away from me. Havn't done any pics yet, but I gotta do that. Meanwhile, lotsa new projects that took precedent over the other ones, I got pink-slipped for six months from now, went to New Orleans (yum!) had a car wreck (I'm okay) waited out the car repairs in the Panhandle over the 4th of July ($$) and then slept awhile and now we're into the hurricanes. I need to clean up the house (my life) this weekend, and then I'll take the pics of all the current projects. Jeez!

Well, I've been busy

I finished Sammy's sweater just in time, it seems, for Sammy arrived the next day, up in Connecticut. He's my friends' first grandson and I was glad to get this pattern quick so I could make the sweater up and some booties to go along with it--the sweater went up with Grandma, but I had to stick the booties in the mail! (Even the picture is hurried:)

Anyway, I'm now working on another one for Sammy, one that he can wear in 6 months or so when he needs a sweater. It's in Knitpicks Merino Style, from a Debbie Bliss book, and is in the many colors that I love. Except I'm not sure about some of these. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it, I may pull out the coral color. I'm just not sure.

Other than that, I've been setting up an interim chatroom for the Summer of Lace Group--haven't gotten too many replies on that so maybe it won't be a go after all. But I've been spending many hours on the web and not so many on the needles. I have put away the Black Water Abbey yarn for the summer (you see it pictured below) and I'm also working on my Fiddlesticks project, Flirty Ruffles, and a new stole/shawl that I found on sale at Patternworks in purple handpainted silk that is yummy. And I want to start socks, but not until later in the summer so I'll have some chance of wearing them, maybe by November? So it's Flirty and then Silky, while working on Sammy's cardi, and then socks. Shouldn't have to buy any more yarn for awhile. Except maybe a replacement for that coral...

As for Flirty

still not cast on yet. I doubt one could have chosen two more different knitting projects to alternate between. I'm nuts. I haven't even gotten a decent swatch out of Flirty yet.

I found an error!

I've never found an error in a knitting pattern before, not one I could report. In my Celtic Dreams Poncho (which I'm turning into a ruana) when setting up the pattern row it says to repeat the lattice chart 5 times, but it should be 3 times. I sent an email to BWA, but I still can't post to the knitalong, since the post link is only on my laptop and she is back at the clinic again. Sigh. I don't suppose anybody else there is using this pattern anyway, though....
